What is a diagnostic cystoscopy?
A diagnostic cystoscopy allows doctors to examine the lining of the bladder and the urethra to monitor, diagnose and treat urinary conditions. A cystoscope is a hollow tube equipped with a light and a camera lens that allows doctors to see what is happening inside the body. It is a quick office procedure that is usually painless.
What can I expect during the procedure?
The small, flexible cystoscope is advanced into the bladder to visualize both the bladder and urethra. Many conditions can be diagnosed with this procedure, including:
- Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
- Painful urination
- An overactive bladder
- Bladder inflammation (cystitis)
- Kidney stones
- Bladder cancer
You will not need to prepare in any way beforehand and there is no downtime. Some patients may feel a slight stinging with urination or visible blood in the urine for the first couple of days afterward.
