What is bladder Botox?
A bladder botox injection involves injection of Botulinum Type-A toxin into the bladder to decrease muscle contractions. This can then reduce the urgent need to urinate, the number of urinations in a day and decrease urine leakage episodes.*
In order to determine if you are a candidate for bladder Botox, Dr. Shelby Morrisroe will run a series of tests known as urodynamics. These special tests are performed in our office in Torrance, and are used to diagnose and better understand the underlying bladder issues. These tests can measure:
- Bladder capacity
- How much pressure is inside your bladder during emptying and filling
- How much urine is left in your bladder after you’ve finished urinating
- Whether or not your bladder muscle contracts involuntarily when it fills with fluid
How can Botox treat urge incontinence?
What does the procedure involve?
Botox can be administered into the bladder during a simple office procedure called cystoscopy. It is done with local numbing lubricant applied to the bladder, and can be performed in about 3 minutes with no downtime. After the bladder is numb, Dr. Morrisroe will make a small injection into the wall of the bladder. After the procedure, your blood pressure and pulse rate will be checked, so you will need to stay in the office for an additional 20-30 minutes. You will be given antibiotics a few days after your treatment. Results take effect within a couple of days, and can last for several months.*
